DATELINE - WEDNESDAY 28th FEBRUARY, 8.30PMGood afternoon, The Dateline team is busily putting the finishing touches to episode 2 of 2007. George is back in the country and last night found himself on the grave yard shift. Though it was worth the effort to speak to Lebanon's Prime Minister, Fouad Siniora. George asks the PM about the political tensions and what and who stand in the way of a resolution. Why the hesitation in forming a government of national unity with Hezbollah? And how does he see Hezbollah's role in the future of Lebanon? In January, as Dateline reporter, Sophie McNeill, settled into her new home in the Paris of the East, centuries-old tensions bubbled away outside on the streets of Beirut. Tonight, Sophie tackles the conflict between Sunnis and Shiites threatening to envelop the nation. After political assasinations and a devastating war with Israel last July, it now looks as if Lebanon is on a collision course of its own, with politcal stalemate, national strikes and sectarian violence. Sophie enters the divided neighbourhoods, the hospitals and the protest camps to speak to people on both sides, all with their own suspicions of powerful nations backing the other side. Chris Hammer recently returned to China after 13 years to find a very different Shanghai; a city in full economic bloom with a middle class on the up. With New Year preparations underway, Chris set out to speak to workers at the bottom of economic heap, the road sweepers, factory workers and others who eek out a living collecting a recylcling waste. Like Zou Heyan, a 19 year old and recent arrival to Shanghai. She's having trouble acclimatising to city life after a 4 day train journey from her village in Sichuan. There's Mr Xu, he earns a decent wage compared to his country cousins - but there's a price, he works 7 days a week and 12 hour days. It may be the natural high from New Years Eve, but Mr Xu and Zou Heyan know they are better off in the city. Free-market capitalism has not graced the rural regions and China's human resource is flooding to the city for work.Thank you to all those viewers who have donated surf boards to the kids of Lido village in PNG. We've had promises of more than 50 boards already and they'll be winging their way on an Air Nuiguini flight in early April. Hopefully this should go someway in saving those beautiful butress roots from the knife. Tune in to SBS tonight at 8.30pm to watch Dateline. Best wishesSarah Parker

A conference will be held March 10 in Baghdad to discuss the future of Iraq. Iran and Syria have been invited to attend the conference. These two terrorist-aiding and harboring states have been responsible, directly or indirectly, for the murders of American servicemen and women in Iraq. Should we sit down at the bargaining table and negotiate with the enemy? Please let President Bush know today.

Mike Evans’ Iraq Journal – Final Installment
Thursday, February 1, 12:30 AM
In just hours, we leave for the border of Iran and the torture chamber of “Chemical” Ali. The road will be dangerous. An Iranian terror organization inhabits that mountainous region; it’s time to do some serious praying for our safety.
At 5:30 AM, we began the drive northeastward toward Iran. Kurdistan encompasses over one-third of the population-inhabited area of Iraq. It has the largest oilfield in the world, Kirkuk. It reaches from Khanaqin in the east and stretches along the Iranian border to Sinjar in the West, taking in the Plain of Nineveh. Our first destination was Sulaymaniyah. I learned that the Iranians are smuggling heroin, opium and hashish into Iraq. The border is open for more than 400 miles, and is controlled by the Mahdi Army and the Bader Brigade, both pro-Iranian Shiite organizations.
Our first meeting was with General Sheikh Ja’affra. This small man with a large black mustache is the Minister of Peshmerga Affairs. He was so thankful to the Americans for liberating his people. “If you withdraw now, you can be sure the terrorists will come to America. It's quite simple; you asked them to fight you in Iraq and they did. If you leave, they will consider that you have been defeated, and will take the fight to you.
“The Mahdi Army is trained in Iran, and is modeled after Hezbollah. Their terror equipment comes from Iran. And yes, it was responsible for the attack in Najaf as well as all the attacks in the south. The suicide bombers are coming from al-Qaeda camps in Iraq, and are being replenished from Afghanistan. They are moving Afghan drugs into Lebanon to sell throughout Europe. Iran is behind all the attacks in Iraq in one way or another.
“To win the war, the borders must be closed and monitored by troops that are not loyal to Iran; troops that can be monitored. Most of Iraq is controlled by the Shia, and for that to change, a new Iraq must be built from Kurdistan southward. Our region is a model of democracy and stability. It is not necessary for U.S. troops to die here; we can stop the terror in these cities if you will let us. So far, your government has said, ‘No.’”
Over lunch we met with Vice President Kosrat Rasul Ali. He invited me to come back and meet with him and President Barzani and Abdul Abdulbari Alzebari, a member of the Iraqi Congress. Mr. Ali said to me, “We have 200,000 soldiers, you have 300,000. You don’t need military in harm’s way; work with us and we will control all of the ground in Iraq. If you will let us, we will shut down Iran. Now 60 percent of Iraq is controlled by Iran; we will see that the number is zero percent.”
Following lunch, we visited the Red House, Saddam Hussein’s headquarters in Sulaymaniyah, and the site of his torture chambers. A precious man, Kiowa, took us to the torture chambers where he was victimized. He was hanged from meat hooks from his chest while his arms were tied behind his back. At the same time, electrical shocks were applied to his body parts. I could see the terrible pain in his eyes as he repeated his story.
I was stunned to learn that Iranians are buying property in Iraq and pouring a fortune into the fundamentalist mosques. Most who escaped to Iran during Saddam’s regime are back in Iraq and strongly support Iran. They have made trade agreements and are pouring money into Iraq. There is an embassy in Baghdad and consulates in almost every region. Tourism agreements allow millions of pilgrims to visit Karbala and Najaf. This is a boon for terrorists who enter the country, along with the pilgrims.
Iran’s goal of achieving instability in Iraq is succeeding. The Holy Grail of understanding is that the U.S. battle in Iraq is between stupidity and stability. America’s liberal, anti-war left is giving aid and comfort to the enemy. The cries of, “We’re losing the war; they’re winning,” emboldens an enemy that has a 9/11 ideology. As I looked at footage of terrorist attacks on US troops, I became angry. To think that 9/11 terrorists have come to Iraq from around the world to fight us while the liberals in the U.S. scream, “Get out!” This is insane. How can you make Iraq the central front on the war on terrorism and not have a mess on your hands?
To have uncapped the genie of Shiite fundamentalism in Iraq with a Shiite super-state next door was a prescription for disaster. One cannot find one Arab out of one thousand that does not believe the U.S. invaded Iraq over oil. To try to convince them otherwise is an exercise in futility.
While we outwardly threaten Iran for their interference in Iraq, we close our eyes to the fact that there are Iranian agents behind virtually every rock. The embassy and consulates of this member of the axis of evil are nothing more than war rooms to fund and plan the battles against U.S. troops.
I am certain that if the U.S. provided the tools for the Iraqi Kurds to fight the war and simply controlled the skies and provided back-up, U.S. deaths would drop and victory would come in time. The liberal media, however, will have to be put into press pools and monitored; they are doing more to undermine a victory in Iraq than the enemy.
“Ali Baghdad” and his forty thieves that pillaged the banks in Iraq are out of their cage like a wild bird. They have migrated to the Middle East, their souls filled with hatred and their pockets filled with U.S. dollars. If an Iranian-style Islamic revolution happens in Iraq, the fire could jump across the Middle East.
I have just learned that another Blackhawk helicopter was shot down in Najaf, the fourth in two weeks. Intelligence officers told me that the helicopter attacks are carried out with Iranian missiles. Nine more U.S. soldiers have been killed just in the past 48 hours.
I was just told by three different airport agents that our flight would not leave for Jordan this morning. Why? There is no jet fuel. Iranian proxies are blowing up the oil trucks as they head toward Kurdistan, and the Turks will not allow oil to be transported into Iraq.
Without morality, democracy is one of the worst forms of government. The world found it to be so during the French Revolution and during Hitler’s day. No power on earth can ignore the Kurdish dilemma indefinitely. Thirty million living Kurds and the blood of a multitude of the dead cry out for justice.
Democracy literally means “rule by the people.” The only people-group supporting democracy is the Iraqi Kurdish people. It’s a fantastic success. Everything President Bush wanted to see in Iraq is present in Kurdistan. Erbil is the fourth largest city in Iraq with Baghdad first, Kirkuk second, and Mosul third.
The headlines today are gut-wrenching. A suicide bomber driving a truck loaded with explosives killed 135 in Iraq’s deadliest bombing since 2003. Shiite Prime Minister al-Maliki blamed Saddam Hussein supporters. An Iraq-born Israeli official tells me that it was Sunni al-Qaeda members. The problem lies with al-Maliki and his political ally, Moqtada al-Sadr and his Mahdi Army of over 60,000 terrorists. I am so glad I came to Iraq, and especially Kurdistan, in order to tell the world the story of democracy at work in at least a region of Iraq.
Maybe President Bush is right about fighting the global war from Iraq. If he does that, he must surely fight it as a war with allies, not enemies. The words of Christopher Columbus may very well describe the President’s War on Terror with Iraq as the central front: “All who heard of my project rejected it with laughter, ridiculing me. There is no question that the inspiration was from the Holy Spirit because he comforted me with rays of marvelous inspiration from the Holy Scriptures.”

Freedom to Dictatorship in 5 years by Mrs. Kitty Werthmann From her own experience, Mrs. Kitty Werthmann will help you see we are walking the same path as the Nazi’s. She was 12 years old living in Austria. At that time, there was order, prayer and pictures of Jesus. Hitler took over and all that was removed! Unemployment rose to 35%, bank loans rose to 25%, unions called strikes, all this with 98% of the people claiming to be Catholic! Soon there was massive welfare. Cries went out for equal rights for women. Socialism took women out of the home, raising the children, and into the factories. ....more >

Jesus Family Tomb Believed FoundNew scientific evidence, including DNA analysis conducted at one of the world's foremost molecular genetics laboratories, as well as studies by leading scholars, suggests a 2,000-year-old Jerusalem tomb could have once held the remains of Jesus of Nazareth and his family.
The findings also suggest that Jesus and Mary Magdalene might have produced a son named Judah.
The DNA findings, alongside statistical conclusions made about the artifacts — originally excavated in 1980 — open a potentially significant chapter in Biblical archaeological history.
A documentary presenting the evidence, "The Lost Tomb of Jesus," will premiere on the Discovery Channel on March 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The documentary comes from executive producer James Cameron and director Simcha Jacobovici.
ANGELINA A BABE AMID BRAINIACSThe prestigious Council on Foreign Relations is about to get a jolt of sex appeal.
The exclusive, Manhattan-based foreign-policy group has decided to admit actress Angelina Jolie, a U.N. goodwill ambassador who has taken more than 30 trips worldwide to advocate for refugees, AIDS orphans and disaster victims.
On Friday night, the council's membership accepted Jolie's nomination - meaning she will soon be rubbing elbows with other club members such as Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, Henry Kissinger, Colin Powell and Alan Greenspan.
Homeschool family told to give up 5 other kidsGerman authorities who sent 15 uniformed police officers to take custody of a 15-year-old girl who committed the crime of being homeschooled now have suggested a solution that, in their minds, would "resolve" the situation: the parents should give up custody of their other five children.
The situation involving Melissa Busekros has been in the headlines ever since the beginning of this month, when the officers arrived at her parents' home with a court order allowing them to take her into custody, "if necessary by force."
She had fallen behind in math and Latin, and was being tutored at home. When school officials in Germany, where homeschooling has been illegal since Adolph Hitler decided he wanted to control the educating of all children, discovered that fact, she was expelled. School officials then took her to court, obtaining a court order requiring she be committed to a psychiatric ward because of her "school phobia."
Christian Right Labors to Find ’08 CandidateA group of influential Christian conservatives and their allies emerged from a private meeting at a Florida resort this month dissatisfied with the Republican presidential field and uncertain where to turn.
The event was a meeting of the Council for National Policy, a secretive club whose few hundred members include Dr. James C. Dobson of Focus on the Family, the Rev. Jerry Falwell of Liberty University and Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform. Although little known outside the conservative movement, the council has become a pivotal stop for Republican presidential primary hopefuls, including George W. Bush on the eve of his 1999 primary campaign.
It's official: Mexican trucks comingOne hundred Mexican trucking companies will have unlimited access to U.S. roads to haul international cargo as part of a year-long pilot program, the Department of Transportation announced today.
In return, 100 U.S. trucking companies will be allowed to operate in Mexico but at a later date.
Calling for congressional hearings, Teamsters General President Jimmy Hoffa compared the announcement to the "Dubai Ports debacle," charging President Bush is "playing a game of Russian roulette on America's highways."
As WND previously reported, the Teamsters Union has strongly protested the opening up of U.S. highways to Mexican trucks, citing safety concerns.
Judge orders 'gay' agenda taught to Christian childrenA federal judge in Massachusetts has ordered the "gay" agenda taught to Christians who attend a public school in Massachusetts, finding that they need the teachings to be "engaged and productive citizens."
U.S. District Judge Mark L. Wolf yesterday dismissed a civil rights lawsuit brought by David Parker, ordering that it is reasonable, indeed there is an obligation, for public schools to teach young children to accept and endorse homosexuality.
Wolf essentially adopted the reasoning in a brief submitted by a number of homosexual-advocacy groups, who said "the rights of religious freedom and parental control over the upbringing of children … would undermine teaching and learning…"
Iran's Ahmadinejad talks to US ChristiansPresident Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sunday said Iran bore no hatred towards the United States as he held talks with American Christians in a rare official contact with visitors from Tehran's arch enemy.
State television showed Ahmadinejad meeting with a dozen American representatives from various Christian orders who are in Iran for a week-long visit to promote peace and dialogue between the foes.
"The Iranian nation does not have any feeling of hatred and opposition towards the American people and we believe that all people are respectful and given the common grounds people have, they could achieve peace and justice," Ahmadinejad said according to official media.
Secret report: Terror threat worst since 9/11The terrorist threat facing Britain from home-grown al-Qaeda agents is higher than at any time since the September 11 attacks in 2001, secret intelligence documents reveal.
The number of British-based Islamic terrorists plotting suicide attacks against "soft" targets in this country is far greater than the Security Services had previously believed, the government paperwork discloses. It is thought the plotters could number more than 2,000.
Under the heading "International Terrorism in the UK", the document - seen by The Sunday Telegraph - states: "The scale of al-Qaeda's ambitions towards attacking the UK and the number of UK extremists prepared to participate in attacks are even greater than we had previously judged."
Cronkite opposes religious influenceFaith-based initiatives. Intelligent Design. Gay marriage. Terri Schiavo.Alarmed by what they see as religious groups' growing influence on government policy, a consortium has launched a public awareness campaign to defend the First Amendment's vow that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."
"That cherished freedom is under severe attack," the Rev. Welton Gaddy said before an audience of about700 people in San Jose. Friday's event included an appearance by newsman Walter Cronkite, who endorsed the new national campaign called First Amendment First.
Solana: new Palestinian government must be “part of the solution”Speaking to reporters after meeting on Friday in Brussels with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the headquarters of the EU Council, Solana reiterated the EU’s stance in favour of the realization of a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians.
During their meeting Abbas and Solana discussed the latest developments after the 8 February Mecca inter-Palestinian agreement and the trilateral in Jerusalem between the Palestinian President, the Israeli Prime Minister and the US Secretary of State.
The meeting came two days after a gathering in Berlin of the Mideast Quartet, consisting of the United States, the UN, Russia and the European Union, which underlined its support for a "Palestinian government committed to non-violence, recognition of Israel and acceptance of previous agreements and obligations."
Study to look at planting identification chips in dementia patientsThe scenario is all too real in South Florida: An Alzheimer's patient wanders away from home and is found by police officers who take him to a local hospital for care.
But the patient cannot recall potentially life-threatening conditions like diabetes or heart disease, making a quick assessment difficult at best.
To help solve that problem, a Delray Beach company and the Alzheimer's Community Care Association of Palm Beach and Martin Counties Inc. have begun a two-year study to determine whether it's practical to implant tiny computer chips containing medical records in dementia patients.
Put 'Real ID' into reverseTHE Real ID Act is one of those laws that will affect almost every American -- at least those of driving age. The law will effectively turn your driver's license into a national ID card.
Yet the law was passed by Congress in 2005 with little debate and no public hearings. It was, in fact, tacked onto an $82 billion appropriations bill called the "Emergency Supplemental Appropriations for Defense, the Global War on Terror, and Tsunami Relief."
You'll need the upgraded driver's license to travel by plane, to open a bank account, to enter a federal building or to receive any kind of federal benefit.
Scorecard For Evaluating Real ID Act Released WASHINGTON - A "scorecard" for evaluating Real ID Act regulations that are expected to be released soon by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been released by the American Civil Liberties Union. The rules will provide the states with precise instructions on how to implement the act, which seeks to create a backdoor national identity card system by federalizing state driver's licenses."
Real ID has given DHS the daunting task of creating a uniform national driver's license with a set of instructions that are riddled with problems," said Barry Steinhardt, director of the ACLU's Technology and Liberty Project. "The scorecard allows users to systematically measure whether they have been successfully addressed."
Friendship on Temple MountA delegation of Turkish experts is expected to visit the excavation works at the Mugrabi Bridge near the Temple Mount within the next few days. This is in accordance with an agreement reached between Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan and his counterpart Ehud Olmert during the latter's visit to Turkey last week.
And already Arab Knesset member Talab a-Sana is begging to know what on earth do the Turks have to do with the Temple Mount, and wouldn't it be easier for the Israeli government to coordinate the works with the local Waqf than with far off Turkey? It's as if a-Sana wanted to say: A close neighbor is better than a distant brother. But that same distant brother once ruled the nation, and throughout the 400 years of its rule here, Jerusalem's Ottoman governor was responsible for the third most sacred site to Islam after Mecca and Medina – the al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock.
Putin's visit to Pope confirmedThe Vatican press office has confirmed that Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 13.
The AsiaNews service broke the story of the Russian president’s visit on February 22. Father Ciro Benedettini, the deputy director of the Vatican press office, confirmed the report a day later.
This will be Putin’s first visit to the Vatican since Pope Benedict XVI’s election. The Russian president did meet John Paul II in 2000 and 2003, also in the Vatican, but unlike his predecessors Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin, he did not extend an invitation for the Pope to visit Moscow.
Global tax scheme pushed to battle 'climate change'WASHINGTON – A panel of 18 scientists from 11 countries reported to the United Nations today that catastrophic climate change is inevitable without a global tax on greenhouse gas emissions – a plan that would impact the U.S. disproportionately to the rest of the world.
John Holdren, the Teresa and John Heinz professor of environmental policy at Harvard University, speaking for the panel said the world must establish a consensus on an acceptable ceiling for temperature rise and find ways to cope with the damage already wrought by climate change. However, these measures will be ineffective in themselves if they are not accompanied by a global tax on greenhouse gas emissions, he added.
"We don't think ultimately society will get it right in terms of the full range and scope of activities needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions until there is an additional incentive in the form of a price on greenhouse gas emissions, either through a carbon tax or a cap and trade approach," he said.
Greenhouse sceptics to congregateHARD-CORE global warming sceptics will descend on Canberra today for the release of a book claiming environmentalism is the new religion.Former mining executive Arvi Parbo will launch Ray Evans' new publication, Nine Facts About Climate Change, at a function at Parliament House.
The book claims climate change is nothing new and declares Howard Government investments in solar power and in cleaning up coal a "complete waste of taxpayers' money".
Gay Bishop Says No to Ultimatum(AP) -- The first openly gay Episcopal bishop, whose consecration has brought the world's Anglicans to the brink of schism, said Tuesday that the Episcopal Church should not give in to demands that it roll back its acceptance of gays.
New Hampshire Bishop V. Gene Robinson said in a statement that Episcopalians should set aside the Anglican Communion's request for now "and get on with the work of the Gospel" even at the risk of losing their place in the Anglican fellowship.
"Doesn't Jesus challenge the greater whole to sacrifice itself for those on the margins?" Robinson said. "Now is the time for courage, not fear.
"It was Robinson's first public statement on an ultimatum that Anglican leaders issued last week during a meeting in Tanzania. They gave the U.S. denomination until Sept. 30 to unequivocally pledge not to consecrate another gay bishop or authorize official prayers for same- sex couples. If it doesn't, the church risks a much-reduced role in the Anglican family of churches that trace their roots back to the Church of England.
DOJ expanding protection of religious freedomThe Department of Justice has announced an initiative that's designed to strengthen the position of religious freedom rights of Americans. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales says while a recently released report shows the DOJ has worked to protect religious freedom, it's clear more needs to be done.
At the same time Gonzales announced the new "First Freedom Project," he commented on the new Department "Report on Enforcement of Laws Protecting Religious Freedom: Fiscal Years 2001-2006."
Keuhl bill seeks protection of homosexuals in California schoolsKaren England, executive director of the California pro-family group Capitol Resource Institute (CRI), says "a very dangerous bill" has been re-introduced by State Senator Sheila Keuhl. England says the legislation is a second attempt to win a ban on textbooks and teacher instruction that "reflects adversely" on homosexuality and gender issues.Keuhl's SB 777 is the follow-up to SB 1437, the California senator's bill from last year that passed the legislature but which Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger failed to sign into law. Capitol Resource Institute's England says the bill is "identical to last year, except she's expanded on what she wants to do."
Ahmadinejad in Sudan: 'Zionists are the true manifestation of Satan'Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in Sudan late Wednesday that "Zionists are the true manifestation of Satan," state-run IRNA news agency reported."
The Zionists are the true manifestation of Satan," Ahmadinejad said during the state visit, speaking to a meeting of Sudanese Islamic scholars in the capital Khartoum. Both Sudan and Iran are accused internationally of supporting radical Islamic movements.
Pope is warned of a green AntichristAn arch-conservative cardinal chosen by the Pope to deliver this year’s Lenten meditations to the Vatican hierarchy has caused consternation by giving warning of an Antichrist who is “a pacifist, ecologist and ecumenist”.
Cardinal Giacomo Biffi, 78, who retired as Archbishop of Bologna three years ago, quoted Vladimir Solovyov (1853-1900), the Russian philosopher and mystic, as predicting that the Antichrist “will convoke an ecumenical council and seek the consensus of all the Christian confessions”.
New 'Bible' says Christ born of gorilla, not virginA new, lavishly illustrated book – described by its marketer as a "postmodern" edition of the Bible – takes Darwin's theory of evolution as gospel and presents Jesus as being born, "not to a virgin, but to a gorilla."
According to Ruth Rimm, Bronx school teacher and book artist, her version of the Scriptures – titled "Lost Spiritual World" – "explores the emergence of a new global spirituality that mixes the best of each wisdom tradition with the latest findings in psychology, quantum physics, neuroscience, and linguistics.

Campaign to install 'gays' in military begunAlthough a new public relations campaign has been launched to convince Congress and the American people that open homosexuality would be good for the United States' armed services, a group that assesses military preparedness says such a policy shift would seriously damage future U.S. military capabilities.
Elaine Donnelly, president of the Center for Military Preparedness, told WND yesterday that proponents of the new congressional plan to open the armed services to self-proclaimed homosexuals are using a skewed poll to support their arguments.
'Renew animal sacrifices on Mount' says radical rabbiAnimal sacrifices should be renewed on the Temple Mount, a member of the radical Sanhedrin organization told Ynetnews.
In ancient Israel and Judea, the Sanhedrin served as the highest court in the land, and was made up of 71 top judges. Now, a group of fringe rabbis say they have reformed the group, although the organization has received no recognition from Israel's official religious authorities.
"In the Torah there are around 200 commandments dealing with animal sacrifices," said Rabbi Dov Stein, of the Sanhedrin organization. "The Torah of Israel demands animal sacrifices. When the people of Israel were in the Diaspora, it couldn’t be done. But now, there is the supreme institution, the Sanhedrin, made up of experts, and it can be done. The new Sanhedrin, like the old, will educate the people of Israel on how to keep and safeguard the Torah."
Lawmaker stirs debate on teaching creationismNASHVILLE, Tenn. – A state lawmaker proposes to use the legislative process to get an answer to the question of whether the universe was created by a supreme being.Under the measure, introduced by Republican state Sen. Raymond Finney, the answer would come from state Education Commissioner Lana Seivers “in report form” no later than Jan. 15.
Finney, a retired physician, said Monday that his objective is to formally prod the Department of Education into a dialogue about the teaching of evolution in school science classes without also teaching the alternative of “creationism,” or “intelligent design.”
The move would thus renew a debate that has raged off and on in the Tennessee Legislature since at least 1925, when the 64th General Assembly enacted a law forbidding the teaching of evolution – setting the stage for the famous John Scopes “monkey trial” in Dayton, Tenn.

The Creation of a Terrorist
How does a child grow up to become a terrorist? Are those who commit unspeakable crimes today doing so because of personal trauma experienced as a child? Or is there some other cause which would explain why a young person would even consider committing acts which will almost certainly result in his death or imprisonment?
Part of the answer to these questions clearly lies in the "education" that these children are given. Today, the children who were in kindergarten when the Oslo Accords were signed (and the Palestinian Authority assumed responsibility for their education) have now graduated from high school. Throughout their schooling, in every grade, they have been taught that fighting Israel is the ultimate cause. Terrorists have been praised and held aloft as role models to be emulated.
Now, in 2007, the situation is actually growing worse. Palestinian Media Watch has studied new Palestinian 12th grade textbooks extensively. The organization concluded:
These new books for Grade 12, written by Fatah-appointed Palestinian educators, are the worst of the textbooks produced by the Palestinian Authority since 2000.
Israel's right to exist is denied and Israel's founding is called a theft: "Palestine's war ended with a catastrophe that is unprecedented in history, when the Zionist gangs stole Palestine and expelled its people from their cities, their villages, their lands and their houses, and established the State of Israel" (Arabic Language, Analysis, Literature and Criticism, grade 12, p. 104). Israel is called: "the Zionist entity," and "Zionist Enemy." Israel's existence since 1948 is an "occupation" (ibid pp. 104, 122).
The conflict will eventually end - not with peace, but with Israel's destruction, effected by Palestinians of all ages and abilities: "Palestine will be liberated by its men, its women, its young and its elderly" (Arabic Language and the Science of Language, grade 12, p. 44).
The textbooks have been written, not by Hamas, but by people appointed by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' own Fatah party. This, despite Abbas' cultivation of a "moderate" image. Can official Palestinian "condemnation" of terrorism be accepted when the Palestinian school system praises terrorists?
The entire Palestinian education system must be overhauled so that terrorism is not taught, justified, and glorified. Otherwise, the Palestinian leaders of tomorrow will be even more extreme and supportive of violence that those of today.
