Alan Jones's Easter Message

Alan JonesHello and welcome to the latest edition of the 2GB newsletter. Thanks for reading this, but more importantly, thank you for listening.

A lot will be written and said in the lead-up to Easter, about its meaning and its relevance.

The overriding concern is that the Easter message will be lost in all the activity and commercialism surrounding it.

When young people talk about bible bashing, they refer to the often unintelligible presentation of historical facts and religious symbols.

Yet Easter is about things we confront every day.

It's about one man, Jesus of Nazareth, a teacher, a man of principle, values and vision.

He was done in by the abuse of power and the manipulation of the mob.

To this extent, the Jesus story, in its modern form, is a story of evil.

It is evil to attack people, to vilify people, to denigrate people or, in the language of Good Friday, to crucify people.

The story of evil, symbolised by the crucifixion, can never be ignored.

There are many today: the poor, the unemployed, the unskilled, the mentally ill, good people who have had their reputations tarnished by rumour and innuendo.

All these people, like Jesus of Nazareth, have their own crosses to bear.

So we pause at Easter to think of the burdens and the crucifixions, that society bears.

The crucifixion reminds us of the human failings of all of us.

Easter is not asking us to be perfect. It is asking us to work a little harder towards getting a better balance between our obvious imperfection and our pursuit of goodness.

Even thinking this way today helps cleanse our lives, quicken our resolve and brings us to a better appreciation of Easter Sunday, the day of the resurrection. Because that's the other half of the symbolism of Easter, the rising from the dead and the triumph of good over evil.

I wish you a happy and holy Easter.

Alan Jones, AO

April Fool's Day

The origin of this custom has been much disputed. Many theories have been suggested.

But it is commonly accepted that April Fool's Day was started by the French. France was one of the first countries to make January 1 officially New Year's Day, by decree of Charles IX. This was in 1564, before the adoption of the Gregorian calendar which we use today. And so New Year's gifts which had been the feature of April 1 became associated with January 1, and those who disagreed or did not hear about the change of date were fair game for those wits who amused themselves by sending mock presents and playing pranks on April 1.

Believe it or not. Happy April Fool's!

"April 1st: This is the day upon which we are reminded of what we are on the other three-hundred and sixty-four." – Mark Twain

ANZAC Day – We Remember April 25

ANZAC DayANZAC Day - 25 April is probably Australia's most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

In 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the Allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula to clear the Black Sea for the Allied navies.

They landed at Gallipoli on April 25, meeting fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold stroke to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915, Allied forces were evacuated after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8000 Australian soldiers were killed. News of the landing at Gallipoli made a profound impact on Australians at home and April 25 became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in war.

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as ANZACs, and the pride they soon took in that name endures to this day.

Happily N'ever After

Happily N'ever AfterOnly at the movies from Thursday April 5

In the tradition of Hoodwinked, Happily N'ever After is a quick witted, contemporary family comedy which threatens to turn the fairytale world upside down.

Once upon a time in Fairy Tale Land, all is well: Cinderella's at the ball, Rapunzel's letting her hair down, and Sleeping Beauty's about to get a big smooch.

But just as it's all headed for Happily Ever After, there's a slight hitch – the wise Wizard who keeps the scales of Good and Evil in balance goes on holiday, and his two assistants, Munk and Mambo, slip up and let Cinderella's Wicked Stepmother, Frieda, get hold of his magical staff. Her goal: nothing less than to take over Fairy Tale Land, let the Bad Guys win, and turn the ending of all the stories to "Happily N'Ever After".

Now Cinderella (Ella, to her friends) is playing in a whole new ball game. Instead of waiting for her handsome Prince to find her, she's got to wake up from her romantic dream, find a way to stop Frieda, and restore the balance of Good and Evil. With her best friend, Rick, at her side, and an unlikely army of Dwarves, Fairies, Munk, and Mambo to back her up, Ella leaps into action. Can she save the day, and find true love where she least expects it?

2GB want to give you the chance to win one of 30 family in-season passes to see this brilliant holiday flick.
